THIEF OF LIES by Brenda Drake

Title: Thief of Lies (Library Jumpers, #1)

Release date:  1/5/16

Author: Brenda Drake

Thief CoverAbout the book:

Gia Kearns would rather fight with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, suddenly disappears. While examining the book of world libraries he abandoned, Gia unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a photograph and transports them into a Paris library, where Arik and his Sentinels—magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books—rescue them from a demonic hound.

Jumping into some of the world’s most beautiful libraries would be a dream come true for Gia, if she weren’t busy resisting her heart or dodging an exiled wizard seeking revenge on both the Mystik and human worlds. Add a French flirt obsessed with Arik and a fling with a young wizard, and Gia must choose between her heart and her head, between Arik’s world and her own, before both are destroyed.

ThiefOfLies-ExcerptTourBannerExcerpt:

I pressed the screen, and it went dark. “How do we know he’s not being forced to say this?”

“The password, May Agnes guide you,” Lei replied. “She’s the patron saint of Asile.”

Agnes? That was the silver woman’s name that formed from my globe. Did the saints have something to do with the Chiavi?

I faced Ricardo. “How did you know I was here?”

“The werehounds tracked your scent from a shirt Katy…excuse me, your nana…gave us.”

“Can your pack help us save Couve?” Arik asked him.

“They will, but Gia must go with me.” He noticed the protest forming on my lips. “Merlin said no exceptions. I’m to get you to the shelter.”

From the corridor came yells, scuffles, and the continual wail of the warning siren.

“I can’t go with you,” I said. “I have to fight with them.”

“She can’t fight with us,” Lei said, glancing at the door. “She almost killed Kale.”

I turned to Sinead. “You know what I can do.”

Sinead gave me a pity smile. “Yes, but you have no control over it. Let Ricardo take you to your father and friends.”

I thought of Kale lying motionless, near death, and I hated that she was right. As much as I wanted to stay, I might be more hindrance than help. I caved. “Okay,” I said, defeated. Lei flew out of the room with the Laniars on her heels.

Sinead hugged me, then rushed after them. Arik moved over to me and cupped my face gently in his hands. His eyes held the intensity that always drew me to him.

I swallowed my breath in anticipation. All the sounds around us went silent.

He bent and lightly brushed my lips with a kiss. His lips were soft and oh, so tender. Butterflies swooped and curled inside me, and it felt like the ground disappeared from beneath my feet. He pulled back a little and said, “Regardless of the fact that you’re a royal pain in the arse, I fancy you. Listen to Ricardo and don’t do anything rash.”

He gave me another kiss and rushed out the door. My heart twisted in my chest as he disappeared. I touched my mouth and exhaled. He liked me. It was against the laws, but he told me he fancied me. Maybe we had no future, but we had now.

“What a sweet display,” Ricardo said, dragging me out of my haze. “I’m not one for rules or laws, but I’d be careful there. The punishment would be much worse for him than you.”

“Why?” I stared at the door as if I’d see Arik there.

“He’s a leader. He knows better.” Ricardo headed to the window. “Are you ready to fly?”

“Did you say fly?”

Author Bio

Brenda Drake Author Photo3Brenda Drake, the youngest of three children, grew up an Air Force brat and the continual new kid at school. Her fondest memories growing up is of her eccentric, Irish grandmother’s animated tales, which gave her a strong love for storytelling. So it was only fitting that she would choose to write stories with a bend toward the fantastical. When Brenda’s not writing or doing the social media thing, she’s haunting libraries, bookstores, and coffee shops or reading someplace quiet and not at all exotic (much to her disappointment).

Welcome To The New and Improved Thirty, Nerdy, Fabulous!

When I joined #Pitchwars I never imagined the exposure I’d gain. Not only have I learned so much, but I’ve met fantastic authors and apparently, have a new live show called Whiskey, Wine, and Writing with my awesome CP Tiffany Rosenthal.

Most days I ask myself:

Because, holy crap! I’m doing author interviews, meeting fantastic people, and my writing is improving along the way. It all started as an impromptu chat because Tiff and I were freaking out over #Pitchwars. Now we’ve eight episodes with some AMAZING interviews! My blog and twitter are blowing up and I’m so humbled and undeserving!

I seriously, do not know what to do with myself some days, and feel like I’ve been swept up in a cyclone.

AUNTIE EM! AUNTIE EM!

It’s been one hell of a ride though!

And I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything!

So, a HUGE thank you to Brenda Drake for her awesome competition. There’s definitely more than one way to win.

Another MASSIVE thanks to Tiffany Rosenthal for being the best CP ever and coming up with such wacky ideas!

With everything going on, all the changes, and the awesome overload, I decided to revamp the site for a prettier feel, and easier navigation!

I’m clearly on a Dean kick today, but come on, can you blame me? Wait! Blame @2000_words – AKA the awesome Jodie Andrefksi for my sudden SPN cravings.

Eh hem.

I hope you enjoy the site, the show, the random thoughts, and if I’m very lucky, my crazy won’t chase you away.

Pimp My Bio: #Pitchwars Mentee

Hello all you awesome authors, mentors, mentees, agents, writers, lovers, haters, nerds, nerdettes, dudes, ladies, and everyone else in between. This is my official unofficial Pitch Wars Mentee Bio! That’s right, this writer chick is putting it all out there. Gonna submit that novel to #Pitchwars and hopefully get a fantabulous mentor to help me with it.

But a message to all of you! Mentors, Agents, Potential Mentee’s, whether you are picked or not you are:

And I just realized that gif is from the episode where Dean eats the Turducken and gets high from the Leviathans goop.

Which brings me to my next point. I am 100% NERD.

This particular ‘I Am Groot’ translates into ‘Thirty, Nerdy, Fabulous.’

I enjoy all things comics, (Marvel, not a fan of DC), Scyfy network (Defiance, Lost Girl, Bitten, Faceoff), online RP games (Wildstar, and forum RP), and one of my all time favorite shows is Supernatural.

I am married to one hella of a hunka hot husband–and we have two dogs, both of whom like to help me read in one way or another.

Storm, my dachshund, trying to face-meld for optimum closeness while I read. (Yes, that’s a Chilly Willy the Penguin shirt)

And Crowley, King of the Demon Dogs (Supernatural Ref) who was highly sad when I stopped reading aloud to him from Jim Butcher’s Cold Days.

Storm is a ten year old Dachshund with attitude. She’s a little snausage who loves to be in my lap. Her hobbies include, kicking me in bed, compulsive licking, and adorable looks.

Crowley is a rescue a little over two years old. Believe it or not, he’s an American Akita, with the most adorable eyes you’ve ever seen. Hobbies include, running circles on the bed, biting a particularly irritating place on his back, and putting new ‘nose art’ on the sliding glass door as he people watches.

They are the best pups a girl could ask for.

ON WARDS AND UP…DOWNWARDS!

All right, down to the nitty gritty. What do I read? I love all things Urban Fantasy. From Kelly Armstrong, to Jim Butcher, to Carrie Vaughn. However, UF isn’t the only thing I read. I’m an avid lover of most genres. I love lit fic, classics, short stories, weird, strange, and pretty much just about anything I can get my hands on. However, I don’t like books so engrossed in technical writing I feel like I’m reading a thesis paper. I prefer voice, compelling story, and just pure awesomeness to a book that has every other word being something so intellectual and rare I’m constantly looking it up.

And I probably just made myself sound dumb or lazy, but I’m not, honest. I just wanna enjoy books and not feel like it’s homework.

WHAT DO I WRITE?

Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Well, my entry for #Pitchwars is tentatively entitled Blood Moon. An ADULT Urban Fantasy. It makes mentors a bit slim picking, but hey, that doesn’t deter me. It’s dark, gritty, and yeah, there’s some pretty gory scenes. I’m not one of those fade to black kind of chicks when it comes to violence and sex if a book calls for it.

However, crazy jump here, my WIP is tentatively entitled Redemption which is an entirely different genre. The exact genre is unknown. I’ve been told Women’s Fiction, Romantic Thriller, eh, since it’s out of my comfort zone, not really sure.

The bottom line is, as a writer, I want to learn, grow, and the truth is, if I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, I can’t fix it. So, I’m not afraid for someone to rip up a chapter and be all like, “Ha, no. That’s just…seriously..no.”

I have pretty thick skin. I grew up with brothers and my family definitely isn’t politically correct when we sit around the dinner table. It’s always been said how it is. No sugar coating.

It started with Dean Winchester. Let’s end it with Dean Winchester.

Thank you to Brenda Drake, all the mentors, agents, writers, and everyone who is participating and making this a fantastic experience. Whether I’m chosen or not, the things I’m learning from the community on twitter, people I’ve met in the writing world, and the advice that I’m granted through fantastic blogs has helped me to become a better writer. I’m much closer than I was yesterday, and chosen or not, I’ll keep moving forward. So, thank you all for doing this.  It’s going to be one hell of a ride!

PS: Before I go. I just want to share.
